History

Just a short story of the history around the Glen Arbor area.

Anderson's Market is perfectly situated in the center of Glen Arbor. The small town and area are rich in history dating back to 1851. The first settlers came here for furs and to trade with the native indians. But later many started settling the region for its lumber. Glen Haven and Glen Arbor seemed to be the perfect spot due to the protection of the natural bay. Although the passage between the Manitou Islands and the coast was narrow and dangerous, numerous ships stopped. Here is just a short outline of the time and events:

1851 First settlers arrived: John LaRue, John Dorsey and John E. Fisher 1921 William Beals, teacher from St. Louis, Missouri, started a summer camp for boys that later became a co-ed boarding school in winter.
1856 Glenn Arbor Township organized as part of the Grand Traverse County 1922 D. H. Day Forest Estates plan begun.
1857 First sawmill and Sleeping Bear House (Inn) erected on Sleeping Bear Bay (Glen Haven) By C.C. McCarthy 1925 Five township schools consolideted into one Glen Arbor School.
1859 First dock (later called Central dock) built on Sleeping Bear Bay by George Ray. 1928 D. H. Day State (Camping) Park donated to the public.
1866 First dock built at Port Oneida by Thomas Kelderhouse. 1931 Sleeping Bear Dunes State Park created by the Michigan legislature.
1867 Glen Arbor Township had a population of 200, three boat docks, four stores, two hotels, a blacksmith shop and cooper shop. 1935 Airplane gliding meets began at Sleeping Bear Dunes which led to use of balloon tires on autos for lauching gliders, and later the noted dunes ride concession run by Marion (daughter of D. H. Day) and Louis Warnes.
1871 First bridge built over the narrows. 1951 Glen Arbor township celebrated its Centennial.
1872 Old lighthouse (first erected in 1839-before Manitou Islands became part of Glen Arbor Township), rebuilt on South Manitou. 1956 Glen Sake High School (a consolidated school serving Empire, Cedar, Maple City and Glen Arbor) built to the design of architect, Harford Field.
1895 D.H. Day aquired lumber mill on west end of Little Glen (later bought J.O.Nessen mill in 1907). 1970 National Sleeping Bear Park created by Congress.
1899 J.O. Nessen (Glen Arbor Lumber Co.) erected large steam mill on north shore of Glen Lake, with tramsway to Sleeping Bear Bay. Credits The History
